Collioure is a small village on the French Mediterranean coast close to Spain. It was once a fishing village but is now mainly a tourist destination. For a long time it was also a favoured meeting place for artists. It is a charming village on the coast with a protected harbour, a beach in the town centre and many narrow winding roads.

It is also a centre for winemaking. The Collioure appellation makes mainly red wine, but also some rosé and white. The main grape variety is the grenache (noir). There is also some mourvèdre, syrah, carignan, cinsault. The whites are made primarily from grenache blanc and some grenache gris.

Much of the grapes go into making the sweet Vin Doux Naturel. These are not called Collioure. Instead they have the appellation Banyuls, the name of a neighbouring village. The geographic boundaries of the two appellations are the same.

The Collioure village is surrounded by vineyards. It is often amazingly steep slopes, sometimes terraced, sometimes not. The soil is mainly schist (slate). It is very hard work to grow vines here, due to the slopes, to the soil, and also to the heat and lack of water in summer.

It is certainly a very beautiful wine region to visit and you can taste some excellent wines here. In fact, we are not very far from the more famous Catalan region of Priorat, with similar soil and grape varieties, but the wines of Collioure sell for a fraction of the price.
