Chateau l’Hospitalet, Domaine Gerard Bertrand, Languedoc, France, stock photography samples, by Per Karlsson, BKWine — This is only a selection of samples. Use Image SEARCH to find more photos — Chateau l’Hospitalet is a wine estate in the La Clape district in the Languedoc in the south of France. It is owned by Gerard Bertrand a wine entrepreneur and ex-rugby player. Gerard Bertrand’s wine empire includes several different wineries in the Languedoc but l’Hospitalet is the headquarters. Bertrand bought Chateau l’Hospitalet in 2002 and has transformed it to the centre of his wine business. Chateau l’Hospitalet is of course a winery but also a restaurant and a hotel. It has 80 hectares of vineyards. With the other wine estates that he also controls his holdings probably extend over more than 300 hectares of vines.
La Clape is one of the driest and sunniest areas of France. It is mainly located on a hill close to the sea near the small town Gruissan. If you take a walk in the Domaine l’Hospitalet’s vineyards up a small hill you get a magnificent view over the sea. In the vineyards they have all the traditional Languedoc grape varieties, grenache, carignan, syrah, mourvèdre. But they also have other varieties like merlot and cabernet sauvignon.
The winery at Chateau l’Hospitalet is very modern with an army of stainless steel fermentation tanks on two levels. This is partially with the intention to use minimal amount of pumping and instead handle the wine with gravity. They use a sorting table at harvest to remove poor quality grapes. Some of the wines get a short or extended (depending on the cuvee) period in oak barrels. Undeniably this is a very modern and well-equipped winery.
