Use Image SEARCH to find more photos — Faugeres is a sub region of the Languedoc in the south of France as well as a wine district appellation AOC Faugères. You find some scattered villages, mountains and a lot of schist (a type of slate) soil that makes for very well-structured and mineral wines. Faugeres is located 20 km north west of Beziers in the Herault region. The wine district approaches the Herault mountains and the vineyards are somewhat on an altitude (typically between 200 and 500 m). There are seven main villages: Autigna, Cabrerolles, Caussiniojouls, Faugeres, Fos, Laurens and Roquessels.
the main grape varieties planted in the Faugeres vineyards are carignan, cinsault, grenache, mourvèdre, and syrah to make red wines and roussanne, grenache blanc, marsanne and vermentino / rolle for the white wines – all typical Languedoc grape varieties. There is almost exactly 2000 ha of vineyards. the average yield is low, only 30 hl/ha.
It is a charming region to visit if you are looking for the somewhat sever Languedoc wilderness with its typical garrigue bush vegetation with wild herbs. It is flatter towards the sea and hillier inland. From some of the small villages in the region you have beautiful view over the landscape reaching almost, but not quite, to the sea.
There are 53 individual wineries and one co-operative. The wines from Faugeres are typically quite powerful with concentrated fruit, high acidity and minerality that gives the wine a good freshness and the typical aromas of herbs and spices that the lover of Languedoc wines so appreciate.
